Oversharing Online and the Way Social Media Affects Mental Health

 This week we were asked to answer some questions about social media and social networking.

One that caught my eye was the question about an optimal number of "friends" to improve mental health, something I want to bring up in this discussion is the idea that a certain number of "likes" or "shares" will also improve your mental health, but I believe some what of the opposite. This is because I remember when instagram started making it so you could hide like counts, it made it so I personally wasn't focused on those kinds of things but instead I was focused on the things that make me happy. It released the pressure somewhat in social media.

In direct relation let's talk about the responsibility social media sites have in a users mental health. While I don't believe the platforms are responsible for the mental health of their users, I believe the platforms that take care of their users will have a higher usage, especially in the world today of being informed and working to help others. An app that has taken over for all the others, TikTok, has little mental health checks and allows for a more real/authentic platform. It also has users who promote mental health and promote the education on various topics.
