Digital Natives

Image
In the 2001 article "Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants" by Mark Prensky, The idea of a digital native was discussed. This is a person who grew up with technology and internet. While I didn't necessarily grow up with a I phone or a phone at all I did have one by the time I was in high school and had constant access to computers at school and home. This means I would be considered a technology native.  I remember that my parents wouldn't let me get my own phone while all my friends had them and I thought it was the worst thing in the world. I would throw fits about it, but in retrospect I appreciate it, I grew up in nature and playing outside in a family that really believed in self entertainment. My siblings and I were left to play pretend and had plenty of things like roller skates and a trampoline but our screen time was limited. Today I look at my boyfriend or my friends younger siblings who were allowed to have unlimited screen time and that was their entertainme...

Knapp's Relationship Model

We talk and share pretty much everything. We split holidays at each others families houses and go on little weekends together. If we had a more permanent attachment such as an engagement (I promise that ...

Oversharing Online and the Way Social Media Affects Mental Health

Image
This week we were asked to answer some questions about social media and social networking.  Image from Rise One that caught my eye was the question about an optimal number of "friends" to improve mental health, something I want to bring up in this discussion is the idea that a certain number of "likes" or "shares" will also improve your mental health, but I believe some what of the opposite. This is because I remember when instagram started making it so you could hide like counts, it made it so I personally wasn't focused on those kinds of things but instead I was focused on the things that make me happy. It released the pressure somewhat in social media. You Can Officially Hide Likes on Instagram—Here’s Why Psychologists Says That’s Good for Mental Health If your interested on reading more about it I would encourage you to read this article! In direct relation let's talk about the responsibility social media sites have in a users mental health. W...
