Digital Natives

In the 2001 article "Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants" by Mark Prensky, The idea of a digital native was discussed. This is a person who grew up with technology and internet. While I didn't necessarily grow up with a I phone or a phone at all I did have one by the time I was in high school and had constant access to computers at school and home. This means I would be considered a technology native.

I remember that my parents wouldn't let me get my own phone while all my friends had them and I thought it was the worst thing in the world. I would throw fits about it, but in retrospect I appreciate it, I grew up in nature and playing outside in a family that really believed in self entertainment. My siblings and I were left to play pretend and had plenty of things like roller skates and a trampoline but our screen time was limited. Today I look at my boyfriend or my friends younger siblings who were allowed to have unlimited screen time and that was their entertainment and it is so weird. They act like they can't be entertained for long periods of time without their phones, like eating and meal while watching YouTube or something.
Something else to think about is how education has changed, in elementary school we had access to computers but it was for a limited part of the day and it was a desktop and was in the computer room. This is compared to once I was in middle school and high school, we had a personal computer or I pad that was given to us by the school because such. large part of our education and lesson plans involved being online. I would use that laptop in every single class for the majority of class. It is just so weird to look back at our education and see how fast that change happened and to think about how hard it would be to go back.

Thank you for reading!
